ENTRANCE TO THE ‘UNDERWORLD’ DISCOVERED BENEATH MEXICAN PYRAMID (VIDEO)

Archaeologists have discovered an underground tunnel that they think was made to imitate the underworld. They discovered the tunnel beneath the construction of a pyramid at Teotihuacan in Mexico. Scans taken electronically at the ancient city have shown the huge extent of the mystery tunnel.

Archaeologist Veronica Ortega, who was one of the people involved in the discovery, mentioned that the discovering of the mystery tunnel had given confirmation that the Teotihuacan’s had reproduced the same kind of pattern of tunnels that was associated with great monuments, with the function of emulating the underworld.

TUNNEL BURIED 10 METERS BELOW PYRAMID EXTENDING UNDERGROUND TO CENTRAL SQUARE

She mentioned that the tunnel was hidden 10 meters beneath the construction of the pyramid and it extends from the Pyramid of the Moon, which happens to be the biggest structure that’s located at the site, and onto the central sq.. Ortega went on to say that the entire function of the tunnel might have been for the reproduction of the underworld. This is mentioned to be the world where animals, plants and other life had originated. She went on to say that it was completely possible that it had been used for rituals and possibly used as part of ceremonies for celebrating the cycles of agriculture.

The archaeologists have mentioned that the next step is going to be for them to go into the tunnel so that it can be explored close up. The researchers are now hopeful that the tunnel has been looted already; a previous tunnel that had been discovered on the site had suffered from looting.

TEOTIHUACAN MEANS PLACE WHERE GODS WERE CREATED

Teotihuacan is located to the north of Mexico City, and the meaning of the word is “The place where Gods were created”. It’s thought that it might have held a population of more than 125,000 people at one point in time. It’s mentioned to have been built during the first, and the seventh centuries and then in 550AD it was abandoned. It’s thought that the site was used for making human sacrifices as human remains have been discovered at the site. The tunnel was first found in June, however details of the finding have only just been made public in Mexico City by the National Institute of Anthropology and History.
